He was a drooling idiot as Missouri\u2019s attorney general where he proved <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2020\/07\/missouri-ag-wants-charges-dropped-against-ar-15-couple-despite-remarkably-clear-statute\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">incapable of contending with the plain text of a statute<\/a> and succeeded mostly in wasting taxpayer resources pursuing a <a href=\"https:\/\/missouriindependent.com\/2020\/12\/11\/supreme-court-rejects-lawsuit-backed-by-missouri-ag-schmitt-trying-to-overturn-presidential-election\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">facially frivolous challenge to void Joe Biden\u2019s electoral votes<\/a>. He\u2019s since taken his talents to Capitol Hill where he\u2019s been <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2026\/07\/a-blanche-confirmation-hearing-witness-is-getting-death-threats-thanks-sens-hawley-and-schmitt\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a dangerous, irresponsible malignancy as a senator<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, he put his crackerjack lawyering skills to the cause of nailing Jack Smith, accusing the former special prosecutor of conspiring \u2014 somehow \u2014 with Fulton County DA Fani Willis based on smoking gun texts placing Smith in Atlanta.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Except, you know, none of that is true.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After Smith testified that he did not meet with Willis and doesn\u2019t recall being in Atlanta, Schmitt sprung a perjury trap that Wile E. Coyote would\u2019ve sniffed out as an obvious loser.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat would you say if I had a series of text messages from your team that said you were in Atlanta at a Warriors-Hawks game on February 3rd, 2024?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A staffer hoisted a poster board before immediately taking it down. Schmitt offered to give Smith \u201ca second to process it so you don\u2019t, you know, perjure yourself.\u201d Smith asked if he could actually look at the board and Schmitt announced that Smith had already perjured himself. He wrapped up by calling Smith \u201ca total dirtbag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Except Smith was NOT in Atlanta. At best they say \u201cHawks\u201d and at no point in the process did a supposed lawyer perform even cursory research before accusing a much more respected lawyer of perjury. Honestly, this is the worst thing to ever happen to a John Kennedy in American history. Unlike Schmitt, Kennedy actually is smart deep down, having gotten degrees from a T14 law school and Oxford. But along the way his elite pedigree became an albatross and he\u2019s adopted the cadence and mannerisms of Foghorn Leghorn. These days he\u2019s largely traded his intellect for a caricature of what a dumb person imagines a smart person to be. For example, the Kennedy relentless yet inane <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2017\/12\/senator-embarrassing-judicial-nominees-with-remedial-law-school-questions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bar exam pub quiz<\/a> the senator makes judicial nominees endure. Obscure book knowledge? Sure. Practical relevance? No, but it looks \u201csmart\u201d if you don\u2019t know any better.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyway, Kennedy ultimately realized he\u2019d put his money on the wrong horse here. Obviously the staff failed to flag the problem before Schmitt went out with his pants down, but \u201caccusing DOJ officials of perjury\u201d is not a responsibility that gets farmed out. Schmitt owns this from top to bottom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While his colleagues at all levels have figured out how badly this went, Schmitt is \u2014 it seems \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/eric-schmitt-jack-smith-iowa-hawkeyes-atlanta-hawks_n_6abbd874e4b0cdca1abea05e\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">refusing to back down<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the hearing, Schmitt insisted he\u2019d gotten nothing wrong, but he seemed less sure Smith had committed perjury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t know if Jack Smith\u2019s lying or not. John Kennedy was so eager to get in on Eric Schmitt\u2019s gotcha moment that he helped hold up the posterboard. <\/p>\n<p>He even stares down Klobuchar with that look of \u201ccheck and mate!\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HiAnWV8yRe\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/HiAnWV8yRe<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Matt Fuller (@MEPFuller) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MEPFuller\/status\/2104993214994276658?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">September 29, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kennedy tried to glom onto Schmitt\u2019s moment of triumph and only managed to bask in the reflected glow of humiliation. Honestly, this is the worst thing to ever happen to a John Kennedy in American history. Unlike Schmitt, Kennedy actually is smart deep down, having gotten degrees from a T14 law school and Oxford. But along the way his elite pedigree became an albatross and he\u2019s adopted the cadence and mannerisms of Foghorn Leghorn. These days he\u2019s largely traded his intellect for a caricature of what a dumb person imagines a smart person to be. For example, the Kennedy relentless yet inane <a href=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/2017\/12\/senator-embarrassing-judicial-nominees-with-remedial-law-school-questions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bar exam pub quiz<\/a> the senator makes judicial nominees endure. Obscure book knowledge? Sure. Practical relevance? No, but it looks \u201csmart\u201d if you don\u2019t know any better.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyway, Kennedy ultimately realized he\u2019d put his money on the wrong horse here. Because he\u2019d actually put his money on a jackass.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Is this the first surrender cobra during a senate hearing? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cH3rwc8vgh\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/cH3rwc8vgh<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Noble Prize in Sarcasm (@rewegreatyet) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/rewegreatyet\/status\/2104983420627747304?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow\">September 29, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2015\/12\/18\/living\/surrender-cobra-feat\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Surrender Cobra<\/a>: a  sports phenomenon that \u2014 along with getting punked by Iowa \u2014 enjoys <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/story\/_\/id\/46675040\/college-football-michigan-state-shocking-comeback-surrender-cobra\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deep ties to Michigan football<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senator Katie Britt, a United States Senator whose only claim to fame is getting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/videos\/media\/2024\/03\/10\/snl-cold-open-scarlett-johansson-senator-katie-britt-state-of-the-union-mgw-orig.cnn\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dragged to hell and back by Scarlett Johansson<\/a>, realized how badly Schmitt had embarrassed the Republican strategy and allowed us to watch in real-time.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The moment Sen. Obviously the staff failed to flag the problem before Schmitt went out with his pants down, but \u201caccusing DOJ officials of perjury\u201d is not a responsibility that gets farmed out. Schmitt owns this from top to bottom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While his colleagues at all levels have figured out how badly this went, Schmitt is \u2014 it seems \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/eric-schmitt-jack-smith-iowa-hawkeyes-atlanta-hawks_n_6abbd874e4b0cdca1abea05e\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">refusing to back down<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the hearing, Schmitt insisted he\u2019d gotten nothing wrong, but he seemed less sure Smith had committed perjury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t know if Jack Smith\u2019s lying or not. It was the only game \u2015 Atlanta was the only NBA game or men\u2019s college basketball game that night at 7:30,\u201d Schmitt told HuffPost.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look, it\u2019s not anti-Trans bigotry, it\u2019s that Republicans just care <em>so much<\/em> about protecting women\u2019s sports. So much that they can\u2019t even fathom the possibility that someone might go watch a women\u2019s college basketball game starring the best player in the country that year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Psst\u2026 gang, I\u2019m starting to think that it might just be anti-Trans bigotry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"594\" height=\"396\" src=\"https:\/\/abovethelaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/09\/GettyImages-2297723262.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1192503\" title=\"\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">(Photo by Win McNamee\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What even is this? You are \u2014 ostensibly \u2014 a professional. For all the times that conservatives invoke the Framers, I\u2019d just once like to hear how they think the authors of the Constitution would feel knowing that the congressional record is filled with comic sans visual aids. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of the day, it was Senator Amy Klobuchar who got the board back in front of the witness, who then remembered the college hoops contest at Maryland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Klobuchar had an unfair advantage since, you know, her state <em>also borders Iowa<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rawstory.com\/jack-smith-hearing\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Raw Story<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat might be the confusion over the names of the team, but perhaps you should have looked at it more carefully,\u201d Klobuchar told Schmitt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schmitt aggressively fired back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhose questioning is this by the way, are you using your time, senator? Is this what this is, are we just having like an open session here? I\u2019m glad you\u2019re trying to rehabilitate the witness, but it\u2019s not your time,\u201d Schmitt said, raising his voice.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou had the teams wrong, sir!\u201d Klobuchar would eventually explain.
