Somewhere the author of the world\u2019s most grating LinkedIn posts is nodding like Robert Redford from Jeremiah Johnson.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mission alignment with UATX and a commitment to admitting students based on objective measures of their merit alone are required.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s interesting to see conservatives still talking about \u201cmerit\u201d in education. This has been the watchword for the assault on diversity in education for decades \u2014 a polite way to bemoan the \u201cinjustice\u201d of some minority students getting into college over mediocre white kids. But now that the Supreme Court handed them a crushing victory over affirmative action, the loudest voices of the \u201cmeritocracy\u201d grift have started changing their tune. Chris Rufo, a right-wing education activist, has started informing conservatives that merit <em>is also bad<\/em> because it allows minorities to get into school over mediocre white kids. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From a recent Atlantic article specifically about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/2026\/10\/french-rufo-meritocracy-race\/688870\/?gift=YJJIG1T6u9saGRHtjaDdqGK_L0NrHmOqGIWWLRQc8gg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the rise in anti-Indian bigotry<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe right always says\u201d\u2014here [Rufo] adopted a mocking tone\u2014\u201c<em>Oh, meritocracy, meritocracy, meritocracy<\/em>. You morons. Meritocracy, the origin of the term meritocracy, it\u2019s pejorative. It\u2019s satirical. It\u2019s not good. You actually don\u2019t want meritocracy, because it perverts these unspoken cultural assumptions in ways that aren\u2019t always visible, aren\u2019t always, say, rationally defensible or problematic, but they strike at an essential component of the national character.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meritocracy was always a cause of convenience. Whatever it takes to push out every admission standard but the one these guys want. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To apply, submit three things:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1. A CV.<br \/>2. A letter of intent answering one question: What would you build, and how would it differ from the law schools that exist?<br \/>3. One piece of your writing you want the committee to read (e.g., an opinion piece, a brief, an article, a speech).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAn opinion piece\u201d as the ideal writing sample suggestion. With 30 tries, I don\u2019t think I could have come up with a more damning indictment of this program than this. It\u2019s an institution with deep roots in the opinion page, where Weiss rose to prominence at the <em>Times<\/em>. Of course the new law school values a snippy blog post over scholarship. There\u2019s nothing wrong with an opinion piece \u2014 serious thinkers write pieces for the masses all the time \u2014 it\u2019s the <em>priority<\/em> placed on \u201copinion piece\u201d that stands out. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether it wants to or not \u2014 and it wants to \u2014 the listing is telling candidates that the committee really doesn\u2019t have time for your 100-page law review article on the applicability of admiralty law to saltwater lakes, and would much rather know that you can own the libs in a 600-word Substack post. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This will not run like your average job search. It will move fast.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s not how you build a law school. It is, however, how you find a hot take artist. Most law school searches dig deep into scholarship and try to strike a balance between academic reputation and managerial skill. It\u2019s a process that can drag out for years.
