Administrative bottlenecks halt that momentum and delay case timelines. Gemini Legal has built software law firms can thoughtfully integrate into their workflows to overcome two common bottlenecks.

“By leveraging specialized tools firms offload a heavy administrative burden,” says Founder and CEO Dan Mora. “That operational shift frees up attorneys to focus entirely on trial strategy, client advocacy, and driving case velocity.”

The Light Bulb

Mora was raised in an entrepreneurial family. He delayed college to enlist in the Air Force, training as a fighter jet mechanic. After the military, he attended night school while working two jobs and launching a small home services business.

“When a friend introduced me to the legal industry in 2002, it was a light bulb moment,” Mora says.

He started Gemini Legal out a spare bedroom in 2004. “I realized early on that to have success in this industry I had to create the right systems and environments for people to thrive—not just my employees but my clients and my clients’ clients.”

Going Digital

Mora applied this concept to the digitization that was overtaking the duplication industry at the time. “It was an exciting time right after the dot-com bubble,” Mora says. “I made a specific effort to be tech forward. We experimented on ourselves first so we could master the systems before offering those digital efficiencies and workflows to our clients.”

“Today, paper has virtually disappeared, but adapting to that shift took a total mindset change for the whole industry.”

And while Gemini Legal overhauled the workflows to eliminate paper, the core services haven’t changed. “Our clients’ clients are still injured parties who need resolution. Our job is to come alongside attorneys to fulfill those needs.”

Twenty Years of Growth

In the last 20 years a lot has changed at Gemini Legal. Most significantly were the acquisitions of Med-Legal and Sayler Legal.

“The Med-Legal situation in 2022 was a massive event. Our volume doubled in just eight months. Luckily, our operating system held! It was all-hands-on-deck—hiring like crazy and working overtime to ensure our existing and new clients kept getting great service.

“With Sayler Legal, we acquired a team of incredible, 20-plus-year industry veterans—top-notch subject matter experts. The biggest lesson from both events was how critical cultural assimilation is. A lot of businesses treat culture as a ‘nice-to-have,’ but it is an absolute necessity. If your people aren’t taken care of or if they don’t have the right tools, problems compound exponentially.”

Mora attributes his focus on the “right tools” to growing up around mechanics and carpentry as well as the Air Force’s uncompromising mission to equip people properly. “It stayed with me,” he says. “I explicitly tell every new employee to speak up if they don’t have the right tools to do their job.”

Mora believes his team knows how to do the job better than him. “My main job as CEO is to keep us focused and aligned. Every leadership day starts with checking our dashboard for any negative signals on our pathway toward accomplishing our mission.”

Bottleneck Software

DraftEngine was the culmination of the company’s drive to build a “complete ecosystem for litigation practices.”

“We acquired the underlying judicial forms tech and then applied our own advanced internal tech to make it more powerful. In California, there are more than 5,000 judicial forms, and courts update them randomly.”

Historically, law firms have had humans manually hunting through state, county, and city websites to check if a form changed—or they find out the hard way when a filing gets rejected. DraftEngine automates that entire process.

“Our tech checks those court websites weekly and updates the forms, giving attorneys complete peace of mind that they are always using the most current document. Other forms enhancement features—cascading case matter, packet and bundling creation, automated review and approvals—are also built on our in-house-created technology.”

This is one solution to the momentum problem. Gemini Legal developed another by identifying one of their own internal bottlenecks.

“Clients wanted detailed medical records indexing, but having humans build them line-by-line was insanely tedious. By bringing in AI scientists and developing our own custom-built AI models, we eliminated the bottleneck, and saved hundreds of thousands of dollars annually, a huge success.

“We quickly discovered the tool was capable of advanced insight our clients could use for immediate discovery and to surface critical details that impact litigation outcomes.”

They launched ChartInsight externally in 2024.

“It goes far beyond indexing records—it lets attorneys chat directly with thousands of pages of medical records to find bilateral injuries, unrecorded side effects, or cross-reference the records against the ICD-10 or Merck Manual.

“By building DraftEngine and ChartInsight to withstand the most extreme and detail-heavy environments (personal injury and workers’ compensation), we created tools that elevate case velocity for any civil practice,” Mora adds.

Human-in-the-Loop

Today, law firms have access to more software tools than ever before. “But software isn’t a cure-all,” Mora says. “Trying to use generic or standalone software without proper workflow support is like trying to drive a nail into a piece of wood with a screwdriver—it’s not going to happen very fast or very easily!”

“Software processes information, but dedicated legal support services carry out the execution—whether that means following up with non-responsive facilities, navigating court filings, or verifying records. Technology and services need experienced human support behind them to finish the job.

“What I commonly see missing is a trusted, strategic partner who understands the operational realities of the work and delivers tech backed by actual expertise, hands-on service teams, and human verification—what we call ‘human-in-the-loop.’”

According to Mora, firms benefit from working with a partner that can act as an extension of their team. “We want to keep innovating, building tools that solve real bottlenecks, and helping law firms serve their clients better.”

For more information, visit gemini.legal

The post Gemini Legal: Solving Bottlenecks to Drive Case Velocity appeared first on Attorney at Law Magazine.

Privacy Overview

This website uses cookies so that we can provide you with the best user experience possible.
