CEO of Rankings.io. \u201cI think you should go to the red ocean where it\u2019s a bloodbath. If there\u2019s competition, there is opportunity and it demands expertise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dreyer has never been particularly interested in taking the easier road. In fact, Dreyer built Rankings.io by going where competition is fiercest\u2014and turning obsession, specialization and relentless execution into a strategy for success.<\/p>\n<p>That philosophy goes a long way toward explaining why Dreyer built his marketing company around personal injury law. \u201cIt\u2019s the major leagues of marketing,\u201d he says. \u201cThe stakes are high. I love competing at the highest level, where someone is looking to take you out every single day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing candid, I don\u2019t want to play to win. I want to play to <em>dominate<\/em>. His parents pursued traditional careers\u2014his father retired as a mail carrier and his mother as a cook\u2014but Dreyer always knew he wanted to own a business. The problem was figuring out what kind.<\/p>\n<p>He started out as a teacher and basketball coach. During his second year of teaching high school, curiosity led him to experiment with internet and affiliate marketing on the side. Before long, the side hustle had become something more.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithin the year, I was making four times my teaching salary,\u201d he recalls. \u201cThat gave me the push to become an affiliate marketer, then a digital marketer, and to eventually launch my own business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was no formal marketing education behind the transformation. No MBA. No carefully plotted career trajectory. There was, however, something Dreyer believes has been considerably more valuable \u2013 obsession.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObsession is one of the most important words that contributes to my personal success,\u201d he says. \u201cWe have four core values: play to win, excellence, grit and speed. Grit is the one I would underline. It\u2019s my core value. Grit and obsession kind of go hand in hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s something he first experienced on the basketball court. As a young coach, he would spend weekends and late nights in the gym. \u201cI was passionate about being the best. I\u2019ve taken that same passion into everything I pursue. Once I commit, there is an obsession there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today, basketball has largely been replaced by business and digital marketing. Dreyer starts his mornings with podcasts and audiobooks. Free time may mean a YouTube business course or reading what another entrepreneur has to say. Even his social media feeds tend to revolve around entrepreneurs and business. It explains, he jokes, why he refuses to play video games. He knows himself too well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m afraid I would just get drawn into the gaming world,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he channels all that focus into marketing. \u201cWhere some people will get a top-level understanding of a digital marketing strategy or tactic, I like to go very, very deep. It\u2019s an inch wide and 10,000 miles deep. That\u2019s how I approach everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-41ca8dd6 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"41ca8dd6\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-settings='\"background_background\":\"classic\"'>\n<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-715353d2\" data-id=\"715353d2\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7e0d3a5e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7e0d3a5e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Going Where It&#8217;s Hard<span><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2f13c313 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2f13c313\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<p>That \u201cinch wide\u201d philosophy led Rankings.io into specializing in personal injury law.<\/p>\n<p>For Dreyer, specialization wasn\u2019t about finding an easier marketplace. It was precisely the opposite. Given a choice between an uncrowded marketplace and one already filled with formidable competitors fighting for every available client, Dreyer knows exactly where he\u2019s headed.<\/p>\n<p>Straight for the fight.<\/p>\n<p>The greater the competition, he reasoned, the greater the opportunity to distinguish himself by becoming exceptionally good at one thing. It is a philosophy he would later explore in his book, <em>Niching Up: The Narrower the Market, the Bigger the Prize,<\/em> and it remains central to Rankings.io today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI get satisfaction out of doing the hard things,\u201d Dreyer explains. \u201cIf you go run a fun little 5K, you can be happy and pat yourself on the back. But it\u2019s different when you can do an Ironman or the Boston Marathon, because it\u2019s not easy. Not everyone can do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Personal injury marketing offered Dreyer that kind of challenge. It also provided a front-row seat to some of the country\u2019s most successful PI firms. And contrary to one of the most frequently repeated clich\u00e9s about lawyers, Dreyer has come away impressed by their business acumen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s this marketing message that goes around: \u2018You went to law school; you don\u2019t know how to run a business.\u2019 I would say many of the successful lawyers are quite good business operators. They wouldn\u2019t be as successful as they are if that weren\u2019t true. I have a history education degree, and I consider myself a solid business operator. They went to law school. That doesn\u2019t mean they can\u2019t be a solid business operator. A potential client who has just been injured and searches online for a \u201ccar accident lawyer\u201d is demonstrating immediate intent. Search engine optimization, Google Ads, Local Services Ads and other performance marketing strategies can help a firm capture that demand.<\/p>\n<p>Brand building starts much earlier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn order to be successful long term, I think you have to build a brand,\u201d Dreyer says. \u201cBrand is marketing to everyone. It\u2019s creating awareness in the market. It\u2019s different from capturing existing demand from someone who is already injured. You\u2019re marketing to everyone, even though they haven\u2019t been in an accident yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ultimate objective is to become so familiar that when an accident does occur, the consumer doesn\u2019t search for a lawyer. They search for <em>that<\/em> lawyer.<\/p>\n<p>Dreyer points to longtime New Orleans attorney advertiser Morris Bart as an example of a lawyer whose visibility eventually transcended the stereotypical image of attorney advertising.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a certain point, he transcended being called an ambulance chaser into being Morris Bart,\u201d Dreyer says. \u201cMorris Bart is loved by New Orleans. He <em>is <\/em>New Orleans. You can only accomplish that through brand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But building a brand requires something many business owners find difficult to sustain: patience.<\/p>\n<p>A firm may spend significantly on television, radio or other brand advertising without seeing a meaningful return in the first year\u2014or even the second. Dreyer believes the payoff may not become apparent until years three or four. That is where the same qualities he credits for his own success become important.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho has the grit, the staying power, the obsession to stay in the game long term?\u201d he asks. \u201cFive years ago, people really didn\u2019t know about Rankings.io. Now we\u2019re advertising more. We\u2019re at more conferences. We have booths. We\u2019ve got PIMCON. We\u2019ve got a magazine and a newsletter. It\u2019s taken us 13 or 14 years to become more well known, and still only a fraction of the potential market knows us today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For smaller firms, Dreyer acknowledges there is no pretending that a modest marketing budget can compete head-to-head with PI firms spending millions annually on advertising. But that doesn\u2019t mean smaller practices cannot become successful, thriving and highly profitable. They can build referral networks. They can become exceptional litigators. Strategy is necessary, he says, but strategy without execution produces nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere needs to be strategy, but I\u2019ll tell you, a lot of times strategy is just a giant guess,\u201d Dreyer says. \u201cYou need to have a trajectory, but I lean significantly more on the execute-and-iterate side than making the perfect plan. Everyone has an idea. Ideas by themselves are not valuable whatsoever. The execution of that idea and creating it\u2014that\u2019s what creates value.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is why Dreyer becomes frustrated when websites sit unlaunched as firms scrutinize every single image or content languishes in an inbox awaiting another round of revisions. \u201cI want to produce so much volume, so much content, so much creative, that I get information back in a shorter period of time,\u201d he explains. \u201cLaunch it. Post it. Then let\u2019s update it. It\u2019s not going to do anything for you sitting in your inbox, waiting on you to make a decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the most part, execution is lacking. Many people who think they\u2019re working hard or think they\u2019re producing a lot simply aren\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The principle has become even more important as the digital landscape changes. Google results now compete for screen space with Local Services Ads, paid advertising and AI-generated responses. Dreyer expects that evolution\u2014and the increasingly pay-to-play nature of digital platforms\u2014to continue.<\/p>\n<p>The specific tools will change. Getting there, however, was anything but simple.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy sister gave me a little $15,000 loan to get started,\u201d Dreyer recalls. \u201cYou don\u2019t have a lot of employees in the beginning. There are things I\u2019m very good at, but there are things I am completely awful at, and I didn\u2019t have those counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven today, with AI, software, code and all these things, people are your greatest use of leverage in professional services. They allow you to expand your messaging and your capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dreyer readily acknowledges making mistakes along the way. One particularly memorable lesson came when he overestimated growth and hired too aggressively. Payroll, benefits, and other labor expenses began consuming cash faster than anticipated, forcing him to take on short-term debt.<\/p>\n<p>He learned quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Rankings.io has considerably greater financial sophistication, but Dreyer says each stage of growth simply introduces a new class of problems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the beginning, building is definitely harder,\u201d he says. \u201cOnce you\u2019ve got the ship sailing, it comes with other problems\u2014communication, continuing to find, retain, and grow talent. Everything gets more challenging as you get bigger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The scale has changed. The intensity hasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>That same grit is evident in Dreyer\u2019s work beyond the agency.
