The new BTI Associate Satisfaction A-Listers 2026 survey analyzes which law firms are succeeding at making associates happy, and how they do it. Michael Rynowecer shares highlights below.

Law Firms With the Highest Associate Job Satisfaction in 2026 2

Associates don’t leave their law firms for compensation — they leave over job experience failures and partner behavior.

In fact, according to the just-released BTI Associate Satisfaction A-Listers 2026: Survey of Law Firms Where Associates Are Happiest, this year only 9.4% of associates are in it for the money alone, compared with 17.2% in 2022.

The 2026 report is based on a large-scale survey of associates at Am Law 200, global, midsize and smaller law firms, designed to uncover the drivers behind associate retention and job satisfaction.

So, What Are Associates Looking for in 2026?

According to the survey, when these seven factors break down, associates are out the door:

  1. Abundant and clear commitment to accelerate associates’ careers.
  2. Meaningful and hyper-relevant training.
  3. High-impact mentoring.
  4. Clear career growth path within their firm.
  5. Strong job satisfaction.
  6. Targeted support addressing women associates’ distinct needs.
  7. Having at least one partner actively invested in their success.

With more than 5,000 organic and unprompted responses, associates recognize only 189 firms for excellent job satisfaction.

The Law Firms Best for Women Associates

In addition to the overall associate cohort, we took a look at the specific experiences of women associates. Women associates report 17% lower job satisfaction than men, rising from 13% in 2022.

Why are things getting worse and harder for women? The survey reveals 13 pervasive reasons, including these top five:

  1. Less support — 54% see lower commitment to help develop their career than men.
  2. Less pay — two-thirds believe they are underpaid.
  3. Lower optimism about career growth within their firm.
  4. Little predictability in work and job-related priorities.
  5. Lacking business development training and tools, which women respondents believe has more impact on their careers than men’s.

Only 138 firms gain recognition as being better for women associates, as ranked by these same women. These firms have a better chance of retaining and recruiting women associates.

These firms have been named “Best of the Best” for women associate satisfaction.
