Earlier today, the advice for Weil Gotshal & Manges lawyers was blunt: look out for number one and enter the lateral market post haste. Turns out at least one Weil practice group leader agrees.
According to Bloomberg Law, Alex Lynch, the head of Weil’s capital markets group, told his associates in a group meeting Tuesday to “look for employment elsewhere” as the firm’s future is currently a giant question mark. For now, the associates still have jobs and will keep billing, billing, billing. But Lynch didn’t give them any timeline for how long that will last.
Makes you wonder exactly what Lynch knows… The Lawyer is reporting a “crunch” meeting for the partnership is scheduled for today, and speculation is high that dissolution is on the agenda.
This was Tuesday. That’s the same day the Financial Times reported that Weil had brought in Davis Polk bankruptcy lawyer Brian Resnick, with a wind-down among the options being discussed.
When the person in charge of your practice group stops telling you everything’s fine and starts telling you to job hunt, believe him. Weil associates have been watching the partners frantically send résumés for days. Now they’ve officially been told to do the same.
