Former special counsel Jack Smith spent Saturday at the Power to the People festival at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland. That’s the Tom Morello-organized mega-concert raising money for the voting rights groups VoteRiders and HeadCount, and Smith wore a black Bruce Springsteen shirt from the Land of Hope and Dreams tour with “No Kings” printed across it.
Nice.
That’s the benefit of no longer being a DOJ employee right there. Smith has been the administration’s favorite piñata for more than a year now, including an Office of Special Counsel investigation into whether his political activity violated the Hatch Act. And just last month, while Todd Blanche was taking heat for speaking at a political convention, the DOJ’s official X account found time to swipe at Smith.
Smith seemed to be enjoying himself. Video from the show has Smith, drink in hand, chatting with concertgoers who came up to thank him, and he was happy to pose with fans of his legal stylings. Not a bad turnout for a guy whose last public appearance was a Senate hearing.
But Smith’s shirt wasn’t even the best part of the story. Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl dedicated the band’s performance of “My Hero” to “my new friend Jack.” He did it wearing an Iowa Hawkeyes T-shirt, which is somehow even funnier.
For those who missed it, at Smith’s Senate testimony last Tuesday, Sen. Eric Schmitt accused Smith of perjury after Smith denied attending an Atlanta Hawks game. Schmitt had his staff hold up a poster board of text messages for the big Perry Mason moment, then called Smith “a total dirtbag.” The game in question was a Hawkeyes game, in Maryland. Schmitt even managed to drag Harvard Law and ASSLaw into the faceplant too, by way of the lawyers on his staff.
Gotta love a front man who shows up with a perjury-trap subtweet on his chest.
