When a Biglaw firm collapses, its competitors don’t exactly wait for the farewell party to start recruiting. Weil Gotshal is preparing to wind down after a stunning series of partner departures and failed merger talks, and Gibson Dunn could soon welcome enough of its lawyers to populate a small firm.

According to the Financial Times, Gibson Dunn is in talks to hire as many as 120 Weil lawyers across the U.S. and London, including more than 20 partners. If their plans come together, it would be one of the largest group lateral moves the legal industry has ever seen. These days, unfortunately, everything about Weil seems to be making history for all the wrong reasons.

The group includes Andrew Chizzik, Weil’s head of private funds in New York, along with James Bromley and James Sargent, co-heads of its London private funds practice. The prospective hires span fund structuring, regulation, tax, and finance. That’s quite the package deal for Gibson Dunn.

Neither firm commented on the blockbuster group lateral move.

As readers know, Weil’s road to dissolution has been paved with partner exits, merger discussions that went nowhere, and an incoming leader who decided she no longer wanted the job. Now, a nearly century-old firm with approximately 1,200 lawyers and $2 billion in annual revenue is preparing to close its doors. So much for the security of a prestigious Biglaw name.

For the Weil lawyers who could be heading to Gibson Dunn, this would certainly be welcome news during an otherwise miserable chapter. Here’s hoping the associates and staff still wondering what comes next will soon have something to celebrate, too.
