Legal help in Central Florida's tourism capital
Orlando's economy is built around visitors. Theme parks, resorts, convention venues, restaurants and the businesses that supply them employ a large share of the workforce, often on shifting schedules. The region also has a growing technology, simulation and health care sector, and new subdivisions keep spreading toward Lake Nona, Kissimmee and Winter Garden. Many residents are recent arrivals from other states or from Puerto Rico and Latin America. Together, that drives demand for help with workplace issues, injuries, housing and immigration.
Orlando sits in Orange County, which shares the Ninth Judicial Circuit with Osceola County. The circuit court hears larger civil cases, family law, probate and felonies, and Orange County Court handles small claims, evictions, traffic and misdemeanors. Since 2023, appeals from the Ninth Circuit go to the Sixth District Court of Appeal, headquartered in Lakeland, instead of the court in Daytona Beach. Federal cases are heard in the Orlando Division of the Middle District of Florida.
Central Florida is spread out, and I-4 traffic makes a midday trip downtown hard for anyone working a park or hotel shift. On XIRA you can compare attorneys, see the rates each one sets, and meet through integrated video conferencing from home or during a break. That also helps people who moved here recently and still have family elsewhere, or visitors who were hurt in Orlando and have already flown home.
Legal issues people in Orlando often need help with
Hospitality and service-industry employment
Hotel, restaurant and attraction workers often ask about unpaid overtime, tip practices, scheduling, discrimination and wrongful termination. Some claims arise under federal law and some under Florida law, and each has its own process and deadlines. An employment attorney can review your pay records and messages from your employer and explain which options may fit. Business owners in the tourism trade also seek help with handbooks and wage compliance.
Injuries at resorts, attractions and on I-4
With so many visitors and so much traffic, Orlando sees a steady flow of injury claims from car crashes, slips at hotels, and incidents at entertainment venues. Florida law now gives most negligence claims a two-year filing deadline, and a person more than 50 percent at fault for their own harm generally cannot recover. A personal injury attorney can explain how this applies, including when the injured person lives out of state.
Renting and buying in a growing metro
New apartment complexes and subdivisions keep rising across Orange and Osceola Counties. Renters ask about deposits, repairs and eviction notices under Chapter 83 of the Florida Statutes. Buyers of new construction ask about builder contracts, delays and defects, and many new neighborhoods come with an HOA or community development district. A real estate or landlord-tenant attorney can review your documents before problems grow.
Immigration for Central Florida families
Orlando has an immigration court of its own, and families from Latin America, the Caribbean and elsewhere seek help with family petitions, work authorization, asylum and naturalization. People from Puerto Rico are U.S. citizens and do not need immigration help, but their relatives from other countries sometimes do. An immigration attorney can review your situation and explain the process before the Orlando Immigration Court or with federal agencies.
Starting a small business
Orlando's visitor economy supports many small businesses: tour operators, short-term rentals, food trucks, event companies and contractors. Founders ask about choosing a business entity, contracts with venues and vendors, licensing, and protecting a brand name. A business attorney can help you set things up correctly from the start and review agreements with larger hotels or attractions before you sign.
Courts that serve Orlando
Orlando residents use a mix of state, federal and immigration courts. Here is how they fit together.
Circuit Court of the Ninth Judicial Circuit of Florida
Serves Orange and Osceola Counties. It hears civil cases above the county court limit, divorce and custody, probate and guardianship, juvenile cases and felony criminal matters for Orlando, Kissimmee and surrounding communities.
Orange County Court
Handles small claims, landlord-tenant evictions, traffic cases, misdemeanors and civil cases up to the county court limit set by Florida law. Filings go through the Orange County Clerk of Courts.
Sixth District Court of Appeal
Created in 2023 and headquartered in Lakeland, it reviews decisions from the Ninth, Tenth and Twentieth Judicial Circuits. Appeals from Orange and Osceola County trial courts, which once went to the Fifth District, now go here.
United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida, Orlando Division
The federal trial court for Central Florida. It hears federal claims such as wage and discrimination cases under federal law, and civil disputes between parties from different states, including many involving out-of-state visitors.
Orlando Immigration Court
Part of the U.S. Department of Justice's Executive Office for Immigration Review. Immigration judges hear removal cases and related applications such as asylum. It is a federal administrative court, separate from the Florida state court system.
