Mexico cannot hold leading U.S. firearm manufacturers liable for the wake of gun violence perpetrated by drug cartels that use their weapons, the U.S. Supreme Court held in a unanimous ruling Thursday.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday threw out a lawsuit from the Mexican government seeking to hold U.S. gunmakers liable for billions of dollars in damages from deadly firearm violence perpetrated by drug cartels.

In a unanimous decision, the high court held that Mexico’s lawsuit is barred by the 2005 Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, a law aimed at immunizing the gun industry from a wave of lawsuits brought by U.S cities.
