We have some devastatingly tragic news to report out of the Texas legal community, where the twin daughters of a Dallas Biglaw couple recently passed away as victims of the deadly flooding that hit Camp Mystic.

According to news reports, John and Lacy Lawrence, partners at Baker Botts and Akin Gump, respectively, sent their three daughters — 8-year-old twins Hanna and Rebecca, and 14-year-old Harper — to attend the summer camp, located along the banks of the Guadalupe River. While their eldest daughter survived the flash flood, their rising third graders did not. As noted by the National Law Journal, both firms expressed their sympathies to the couple:

When asked for comment on the situation, Akin wrote in an emailed statement, “We extend our deepest condolences to Lacy, her husband John, Harper, and the entire Lawrence family. We hold them close in our thoughts and prayers, along with everyone who has suffered from the tragedy in Texas, feeling the weight of their pain and sadness during this unbearably difficult time.”

Baker Botts also wrote in an emailed statement, “Our hearts are with our colleagues, clients, and communities impacted by the catastrophic Texas Hill Country floods. The magnitude of loss, pain of not knowing, and extensive destruction are profound and devastating for those directly affected and our communities.”

The Lawrences said the following of their daughters in an email to the Texas Lawyer: “Hanna and Rebecca brought so much joy to us, to their big sister Harper, and to so many others. We will find ways to keep that joy, and to continue to spread it for them. But we are devastated that the bond we shared with them, and that they shared with each other, is now frozen in time. Thank you for the love and support.”

We here at Above the Law would like to extend our sincere condolences to the Lawrence family and their friends during this incredibly difficult time.
