The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia announced Monday that a Georgia man, Eric Council, who was behind the hacking of the X account of the prior chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, has entered a guilty plea to conspiracy to commit aggravated identity theft.
The guilty plea by Council, 25, is based on actions that date back to Jan. 9, 2024, in which he and others executed a SIM swap of the mobile phone account associated with the SEC’s official X account.
