When you think about what qualifies a person to work as a U.S. attorney, you might think of things like respect for country and excellent communication skills. When Donald Trump thought about what it took, he decided to appoint a lawyer who said “veterans weren’t fit to work” and is known for bending the truth past its breaking point. That’s right, Alina Habba was tapped on the shoulder to represent the public’s interests in New Jersey. I’m gonna wager that, regardless of what the folks in Jersey want, her zealous representation is going to look a lot like making sure whatever Donald Trump wants to get done gets done.
An easy way to find out if she’ll be carrying out the People’s or Trump’s agenda in New Jersey will be to follow one name: Mahmoud Khalil. The case was recently moved from Louisiana to New Jersey and Habba’s involvement could soothsay what her involvement (or any other Trump lackies) with political prisoners will look like under this administration.
For everyone in New Jersey’s sake, let’s hope that Habba took Elizabeth de la Vega’s advice and brushed up on Con Law before she starts meddling with her shiny new job responsibilities.
