Attorneys have expressed mixed feelings about the U.S. attorney appointment of one of President Donald Trump’s lawyers.
White-collar attorneys in New Jersey were initially apprehensive about the decision to appoint Alina Habba, President Donald Trump’s often fiery defender and councilor, as the new U.S. attorney for the Garden State, and statements the newly sworn-in top federal prosecutor has made in recent days have done little to reduce those fears.
“Many are concerned it will become a much more politically charged office than one based on independence and nonpartisan decisions,” said retired white-collar defense attorney William Maderer, who was chief of the office’s special prosecution division in the late 1970s.
