“We’ve seen a lot of action from the FTC on privacy recently, and COPPA [the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act] is one of the areas where they have the clearest authority,” said Eric Null, of the Center for Democracy & Technology.

       

The federal government’s pending lawsuit against TikTok for alleged violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act is a warning to the many other social media platforms that regulators are closely watching how they treat their young users, consumer protection and privacy lawyers said this week. 

Eric Null, co-director of the privacy and data project at the Center for Democracy & Technology, called the lawsuit a “sign that the FTC [Federal Trade Commission] is paying attention.”
