Unsurprising these folks want to watch it burn.

An open letter by the Conservative Action Project organization has taken aim at battered Republican candidate for Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy. The wannabe speaker has lost 13 iterations of the vote for Speaker — and counting! But the Conservative Action Project is pushing for more folks to join.

Rather than engage them in a good faith negotiation, Rep. Kevin McCarthy has instead maligned both the requests and the messengers. He has publicly and through proxies leveled attacks against members of his own party, including threatening to deny committee assignments for those who continue to oppose him. Moreover, he has failed to answer for, or commit to halting, his coordinated efforts in the 2022 elections to promote moderate Republican candidates over conservatives.

Of course, since the letter was penned, the number of GOP representative elects that have voted against McCarthy has only decreased. But, it’s still fascinating to take a look at the folks who are pro-GOP dysfunction.

Now, it’s not super surprising that far-right crazies are supporting the antics of far-right crazies. But taking a perusal at the list of signatories of ~70 people, there are some notable names in the legal world. Poignant on the second anniversary of the attempted January 6th coup, let’s take a look at some of the folks as eager to push McCarthy out of the leadership of the GOP as they were to do everything in their power to have Donald Trump steal the 2020 election.

The big name for legal watchers is none other than Ginni Thomas, wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and a law school grad/political operative. Ginni went ham after Trump lost the 2020 election working her contacts to undo those results. She sent a series of increasingly unhinged text messages to Mark Meadows, Trump’s Chief of Staff; she communicated with Coups 4 Dummies lawyer John Eastman; and pestered Wisconsin lawmakers over selecting an alternative slate of electors. All the while her husband has repeatedly refused to recuse himself from January 6th related cases.

Speaking of Coups 4 Dummies lawyer John Eastman, he’s also signed the letter. His election advice to Trump — and the legal aftermath — has been nothing short of a joke. For his efforts he lost his job, is dealing with a bar complaint, and congressional and state subpoenas.

And while we’re on the subject of people who got shitcanned over their dubious legal advice on the 2020 election (and the fact that the firm claimed to have no knowledge of the representation), that brings up former Biglaw partner Cleta Mitchell. She’s also participated in a now infamous phone call where Donald Trump was captured on tape pressuring Georgia election officials to commit what election law experts identified as well within the statutory definition of election fraud.

And dontcha know it, all of them were called in front of the January 6th Committee to answer questions about their work to undo the results of the 2020 election. Bravo — with legal luminaries like this on your side, who needs enemies!
