In the absence of a federal statute, many states have implemented their own data privacy laws, prompting Rep. Debbie Lesko, R-Arizona, to cite concerns that a federal law would need strong preemption language.

U.S. lawmakers from both sides of the political aisle are calling for a federal privacy law that would also protect children’s data and online security.

“The (proposed) American Privacy Rights Act is foundational for protecting our kids online,” Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Washington, said Wednesday at a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee hearing. “Working together with other important legislation, like the Kids Online Safety Act, the Children’s and Teen’s Online Privacy Protection Act and other bills … these solutions will ensure the best protections to date for our children.” Rodgers said.
